The Carriage House

University City

An oasis in the heart of University City best describes this carriage house that has been completely renovated.  Originally a turntable on the first floor helped position carriages to be sent upstairs via an elevator.  It served as the children’s summer playhouse for the Slattery family in 1916.

Redesigned as a home in 1967, it has retained the original beamed and tongue-in-groove ceilings.  The hosts have decorated to suggest an earlier era using Mission-Style furniture and handcrafted decorations.  In winter enjoy a wood fire in the Franklin stove; in summer, walk through the glass doors to the porch.

A complete kitchen, breakfast room, powder room, dining room, and living room are on the first floor.   On the second floor there is a sitting area at the top of the stairs with a desk and easy chairs.  Choose from a king-bedded or double-bedded room.  Each has been attractively decorated with the host’s treasures.  A bath completes this floor.   Weekly and monthly rates are available.

GUEST COMMENTS

“The Carriage House is wonderful. We were able to have a dinner party for our daughter to celebrate her graduation. The parents of her friends were just amazed when they arrived. They couldn't get over how beautiful and spacious the accommodations were, while they were all stuck in hotel rooms. The location is also great. The lovely hostess and the folks at the Bed & Breakfast Connections were so nice to deal with. I highly recommend the Carriage House.” MM

GUEST COMMENTS

“An elegant B&B with a most accommodating host. Great attention to detail. An amazing house that has been lovingly cared for” MA

“I had a wonderful stay.  The suite was lovely and clean - and so much light, just wonderful. I like the location, and the host provided directions to various public transit options (my preferred method of travel in cities).  Breakfasts were easy, and there was plenty to eat even though the meal was described as continental. I will certainly go back as well as recommend it to my friends.” MT

Village B&B

University City

This charming late 19th century house has been lovingly renovated by the owner.  The décor of each room is complimented by the hostess' collection of arts and crafts. The second floor guest room is simple and serene--in the tradition of William Morris--with hand-blocked wallpaper, a carved chest of drawers, a rocker, built-in desk, and twin beds. The bath is down the hall, and although shared with your hostess, is essentially private.

Each morning your hostess will provide a continental buffet with coffee, tea, fruit or juice, toast, assorted jams, and cereals. Refrigerator space can be provided upon request.  Your host’s standard poodle is confined when guests are in the house.

This B&B is within walking distance of the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and the Art Museum. Interesting restaurants and cultural activities are nearby.

GUEST COMMENTS

“The B&B itself was very clean, attractive, quiet and comfortable, and the price is quite reasonable. Breakfast was very good and ready whenever we requested it. We did not have any problems finding parking on the block.” AM

“We enjoyed our stay.  Our hostess was very helpful in terms of helping us figure out how to get around and giving us suggestions of things to see.  It was very nice after a day of touring in the big city to come back to a home like atmosphere.” MS

“We had a wonderful time. You have a jewel of a house and you are such a thoughtful and charming hostess! And come to think of it, so is Daphne, your poodle!” DS
