1807 Townhouse

Historic Area

This attractive, spacious Society Hill home, built in 1807, was completely renovated by its present owners in 1967. Today, the open, modern plan of the interior may make you forget that this historic building has given shelter to Philadelphians for two centuries. 

In 1865 the front of the property was demolished and all of the floors were raised – making the ceilings on the first floor 13 feet high. The marble steps and double doors were built in 1865 creating a grand entrance. A state-of-the art kitchen is a recent addition.  Choose queen, king or twin beds each with private bath. All rooms have TV, private phone, central A/C, individually controlled heat. Public transportation is at the corner.

Your host is a retired stock market and futures trader. He is well versed in the history of the area. Your hostess, recently retired as Assistant Dean of a major medical school, is very active in the community. Both are supporters of a number of Philadelphia opera and theater companies and have conducted extensive research to discover the fascinating history of their home.

Artist's Nook

Art Museum Area

Located on the third floor of a corner townhouse in the Fairmount section of the city is the Artist’s Nook. Just blocks from both the Art Museum and the landmark Eastern State Penitentiary, this suite is in one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the city. Home to an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops, the Fairmount section is also close to a number of museums and Boathouse Row.

The townhouse was built in 1885 and, the current owners have lived there over 25 years. Your host is an accomplished musician and photographer. Your hostess is conversant in French and is a member of the Alliance Francais which promotes the French culture. Together they have filled their home with an interesting collection of pieces by local artists. Upon arriving, you are sure to meet their resident cat.

The 3rd floor suite is a spacious and sunny space. The newly renovated bath features a Jacuzzi tub and glass shower. The tile floor, numerous plants and fluffy towels give the room a spa-like feeling. Down the hall is a mini kitchen that has a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee-maker and toaster oven as well as a glass table and chairs. The hostess stocks the kitchen with breakfast items for you to help yourself to each morning .A queen-size brass bed and comfortable reading chair are in the adjacent bedroom. The beautiful bay window provides ample sunlight and a view of the garden.

The Convention Center is a pleasant 30 minute walk or short bus ride away. The Art Museum, Perelman Annex, Rodin Museum, Franklin Institute and Academy of Natural Sciences are all within a mile or less of this accommodation.

This townhouse was built in the late 1800’s and retains much of its Victorian character including beautiful, original woodwork. Your host, a florist and horticulturalist , has filled the home with antiques and collectibles.

Two spacious guest suites occupy the second and third floors of the home. The second floor suite is accented by the original built-in Victorian chestnut armoire which covers most of one wall. In addition there is a queen-size bed and sofa. The third floor suite features beautiful triple windows with stained glass, a queen-size bed and sitting area. Each air-conditioned suite includes a bright, spacious, eat-in kitchen and private bath. Self-serve continental breakfast, wireless internet, and cable television with music channels are all provided.

This townhouse is close to theaters and cultural venues such as the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Academy of Music, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, home of the famous Philadelphia Flower Show. With the Broad Street Subway less than a block away, this accommodation is also an ideal location for those heading to the Sport and Entertainment Complex. With the Italian Market just blocks away, you are within walking distance of numerous restaurants. The Philadelphia Art Museum, Independence National Park and the Philadelphia Zoo are easily accessed by public transportation and taxis.

Historic Area

Built by Quakers in 1737, this Colonial house is located on an historic, pedestrian-only street in the heart of old-city Philadelphia near galleries, historic sites, and restaurants. The cobblestone street is the oldest residential street in the United States. People have lived and worked on this tiny street for almost 300 years! Each room in the house is beautifully simple, furnished sparsely with antiques.

 Read and sleep in quiet, calm rooms with wide board floors up original winding stairs. The Blue Room is beautiful, light, and restful. It is double bedded with a private bathroom with tub. The Red Room is off a shared library. This room, with a unique Moravian tile fireplace designed by Henry Mercer, has a bathroom with shower and queen size bed.

Because of the historic nature of the house, no pets and children are accepted. Your host is an artist who recently completed a book of photographs featuring the gardens of Tuscany. There is no TV, but there is home-made bread for breakfast.

Privacy Galore - the entire third floor of this renovated 1927 brick townhouse is available for a single person wanting lots of space and privacy, a couple, or friends who want separate rooms. The air-conditioned suite includes a large master bedroom with king bed, comfortable chairs, cable TV, desk, telephone and mini-refrigerator; a smaller room with twin bed, desk, comfortable chair and cable TV with telephone. A private bath is in the hall between the two rooms. For extra guests, the second floor king bedded room with an “almost private bath” is available. Double pane windows control street noise.

The owner, a retired Banker, provides a hearty continental "plus" breakfast in the dining room. His cheerful Cocker Spaniel can be confined to the kitchen and patio during your stay and is never permitted upstairs. Smoking is permitted in the covered garden patio adjacent to the kitchen. Wireless internet is available.

Located just one block from the bustling South Street entertainment district, it is a short walk to the downtown business district, historic area, Penns Landing, the Convention Center and the downtown hospitals. Dozens of restaurants are within a short walk.

Clinton Street is one of the prettiest streets in Philadelphia. Because there is no through traffic, it is quiet and peaceful. In the later part of the 19th century, many who were the "movers and shakers" of the city owned homes here.

This 1860 Federalist townhouse was purchased and lovingly restored by the hosts. The host's interest in history and the hostess's background in home economics have served them well in their efforts to maintain the original character of the home. 

A deck and a more contemporary family room were added. Last to be completed was the spacious garden that parallels the entire length of the home. The parlor deserves special attention. The beautifully restored plaster molding, ceiling medallion and the magnificent gold leaf chandelier imported from Ireland, serve as elegant backdrops for the Victorian furnishings. Another "don't miss" is the bay of the dining room (added in 1901) with its leaded windows. The guest room on the third floor is attractively furnished with a double bed and large private attached bath.

Nearby public transportation will take you to any area of the city. There is limited street parking. However, should that not be available there are neighborhood parking lots available for a fee.

The townhouse above the apartment is occupied by your hosts who look forward to greeting you. She is a management consultant and he is a lawyer who also runs a non-profit organization. Both are longtime Philadelphia residents who know and love the city and are anxious to share information with you about their favorite haunts.

Located near the Convention Center, the historic area, the Reading Terminal and the Italian Market, Lyda Rose provides convenience and comfort to guests who travel to the city for stays of a week or more.

Your hostess, a local designer and business owner, divides her time between this Center City townhouse and her family’s home in nearby Chestnut Hill. New Market B&B

Historic Area

The present owner of this small, historic 1811 Philadelphia brick townhouse transformed it from an abandoned shell to a comfortable, attractive home with a modern interior which retains some beautiful features of the original structure.

Some of the nearly 200-year-old interior brick walls are still exposed. Also preserved are the original floors, doors, latches, narrow, circular wooden stairs and the butter-colored old pine paneling enclosing them. By building a small greenhouse at the rear of the ground floor, more space and light have been added.

Furnished in a contemporary style, the B&B is an interesting combination of old and new. The air-conditioned bedrooms, located on the second and third floors, are simply furnished, one with a double bed and one with a king bed that can be made up as twins if requested. Each room has an ensuite bath and basic cable TV. The wood-burning fireplace in the third floor bedroom adds a special charm to this room on a winter evening. Wireless internet connection is a plus.

The area north of Old City, Northern Liberties, has become a center for local artists and musicians. Once merely a neighborhood of row homes, this revitalized area is now interspersed with galleries and restaurants. Just a 10 minute walk from Independence Park, the area is also conveniently located for public transportation to the Convention Center as well as the University area.

Two units are available in this apartment building. The first floor studio apartment features a queen-size bed, newly renovated kitchen and loft with twin beds.

An additional first floor apartment offers a large living room as well as a spacious, bright kitchen. The lovely garden is accessed from the kitchen. The bedroom provides a queen-size bed and built in closet space.

The Northern Liberties B&B has a garden area which is accented by a lovely mural of plants. A coin-operated laundry is available in the basement of the building. For stays of less than a week, the hosts stock the kitchen with breakfast items for you to help yourself to in the morning. Weekly and monthly rates are available upon request.

Historic and hip – both adjectives describe the interesting neighborhood where this B&B is located. Just two blocks away are Elfreth’s Alley – the oldest continuously occupied street in the United States and Christ Church where Ben Franklin worshipped. Cafes and art galleries populate this thriving arts community.

Old City B&B is your own private second floor apartment in the heart of this exciting neighborhood. The studio unit is surprisingly quiet with all the amenities of home - a queen bed, comfortable sitting area, cable TV, private bath, and fully equipped kitchen which will be stocked with items for your use until you have a chance to shop for your own favorite foods. Be sure to try the pastry shop across the street.

Guests whose dog accompanies them on their travels are welcome. Ask your host about her interesting “Too Little Time” business which includes dog sitting service. For long term guests, there is complementary admittance to a local fitness center. Next door is a free wireless internet café.

On The Square B&B

Rittenhouse Square Area

Located in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, this turn of the century mansion was once home to a publishing magnate. Built in 1897, the exquisite woodworking and high ceilings reflect the architecture of that time. However, the current owners have maintained old world elegance while providing 21st century comfort.

Two of the suites offer spacious sitting areas as well as private baths with bidets and whirlpool tubs. The other two suites offer cozy queen-size beds, decorative fireplaces and private baths. A full breakfast is served each morning in the formal dining room. A spacious drawing room on the second floor provides a lovely area for reading or mingling with other guests.

The B&B also offers a media room for movie viewing and a game room with an antique pool table for guests’ use. Wireless internet and satellite t.v. are available for all guests. Numerous restaurants and entertainment venues are within walking distance of this accommodation. However, once you enter this upscale retreat you may not want to leave.

Penn’s Landing B&B

Historic Area

Just blocks from the Historic Area, the Penn’s Landing B&B is a lovely surprise. This new accommodation, built in 2008, offers four beautiful guest rooms each with their own modern bath as well as a spacious living room, modern kitchen, dining area and outdoor patio.

This 3 story home is decorated in soothing earth-tones with beautiful hard wood floors. The many windows provide abundant natural light. Beautiful tile, full-size shower heads, modern fixtures and luxurious towels give each bath a spa-like feeling. The fluffy duvets on each bed beckon guests to retire for the evening.

The ground floor room has a king-size bed and reading area as well as an ensuite bath. This private space with wall-to-wall carpeting is comfortable and inviting. The first floor room has a queen size sleigh bed and small reading area. The bath is just outside the door and offers a glass shower. French doors in the bedroom open onto the enclosed brick patio.

The spacious master suite, on the third floor, has a king-size bed and large reading area as well as a brand new flat screen TV. The bath features double sinks, a Jacuzzi tub and a steam shower. A smaller room on the same floor has twin beds and a private hall bath.

Your host, born and raised in County Mayo, Ireland, is a general contractor and built the home at Penn’s Landing. His fine craftsmanship as a contractor is matched by his Gallic hospitality.

The B&B is convenient to the Historic area and Penn’s Landing as well as numerous restaurants. The Convention Center and Museums are just a short cab ride away and walking distance in good weather. Special rates are available for a whole house rental making this a great spot for couples traveling together or families with older children.

Picasso Loft

Located in the heart of Old City, this fully furnished upscale loft is available for nightly, weekly or monthly rental. This is the perfect spot for family members or colleagues traveling together as the Loft sleeps 4-6. Recently renovated, the loft is over 2,000 square feet and offers the utmost luxury for the discerning traveler. Two bedrooms each with a queen-size bed and private bath flank the open living space. One bedroom has a view of Christ Church while the master bedroom overlooks the southwest skyline of the city. Off the master suite is a beautifully tiled bath with full shower and hot soak tub. A marble and tile Italian bath with full shower is off the other bedroom. A top of the line kitchen features granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, 12 foot island with built in sink and Viking gas range. The adjacent dining table seats 10. Awash in warm colors and natural light from the many windows, this apartment is spectacular both day and night. Sit at the built in desk to catch up on your work, relax in front of the 52 inch television, or admire the contemporary artwork by local artists. High speed internet, ceiling fans, central air and a washer and dryer are available.

Just steps from the Betsy Ross House, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and other Historic landmarks, this unique loft is also convenient to many art galleries and restaurants.

"The loft was absolutely incredible.  It was fully equipped with everything you could ever need from bundt pans, to bakeware, to very comfortable beds, central A/C & heating, ample closet space, backpacks (which were very handy for our day trip to NY) and two great showers.  We are huge cooks, and this made so much sense for our family.  It was worth every penny because we could be comfortable in our own loft, which was HUGE, and could prepare meals at home.   There is a premium sound system, a large tv in one of the areas, great natural lighting in the living room, a premium stove and oven, big refrigerator, and the location could not be better.   The street was extremely safe and the loft was incredibly quiet.  The owner was also in contact with us and so pleasant and accommodating.  We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip!" Society Hill Studio

Built in 1829 by Henry White, the son of the first bishop of the Episcopal Church, this magnificent property has been home to several prominent Philadelphia families. Located on Mansion Row in Society Hill, this accommodation looks out over the very streets walked by our Founding Fathers. Historic buildings give way to charming coffee shops and restaurants. Just a 15 minute walk from the Convention Center, this is the perfect spot to experience Historic Philadelphia. With the kitchen, it also is an excellent accommodation for a longer stay.

 Upon entering the building you will notice the stunning murals in the foyer. Climbing to the third floor, you will enter a sunny studio apartment. The spacious sitting area is accented by a decorative fireplace and Oriental rug. High ceilings and warm yellow walls as well as striking artwork adorn the space. Nestled in the corner of the room is an antique, four poster, full-size bed. The lovely recessed windows provide a beautiful view of the city. Custom shutters allow for privacy at night.

Your host is an independent consultant in the fields of management and leadership as well as a practicing Episcopal priest. Your hostess is a retired arts manager and amateur pianist. They are both interested in politics and the performing arts and volunteer locally. In addition, they speak enough French and Spanish to be helpful in those languages.

South Bridge B&B

Naval Square Area

“Welcome to the Neighborhood” is the title of the mural which graces the side of this townhouse. The South Bridge B&B is the first home visitors see when approaching Philadelphia from the south or west. Originally built in 1896, your hostess is only the second owner of this property. While the home is over 100 years old, it has a very contemporary feel. Upon retiring from her practice as a clinical psychologist, your hostess turned to her second love-art and architecture. After taking a refresher course in Interior Design at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, she undertook the design of her home renovation which was completed in January 2010.

The first floor living room and dining area while essentially modern in concept are accented by several artifacts and photographs from your hostess’ safari to Kenya and Tanzania. The second floor guest suite is decorated in soothing shades of blue and gray. Luxurious linens and multiple pillows make the queen-size bed quite inviting. The lovely windows are adorned with floor to ceiling drapes which are functional as well as decorative. A desk provides ample workspace for travelers. The adjoining bath has a lovely tiled shower and beautifully decorated glass sink.

Located less than a 5 minute walk from the Amtrak station and directly behind the #40 bus stop which heads east through the city, this property provides access to all of Philadelphia’s major points of interest. Whether you are headed to the Historic Area, Convention Center or University District, the South Bridge B&B is a convenient spot to stay. Free parking is a major plus. A very special Sunday brunch is available upon request for an additional fee, and be sure to ask about the swimming pools available from June to September.
